Excellent feedback from Dr. delaTorres! The struggle to find identity is problematic for me because the Modern Era de-centered the author and text. How to discover a new medium by refurbishing language into a new form--hmmm...., that's a challenge, and Ulmer has attempted to assist in that enclosure process. Please continue to post feedback Christopher, as your schedule allows.

I only had one question that I didnt get answered from Mrs. Harris Monday morning. She stated to Mr. McKenzie that him watching the live video of the planes flying into the WTC buildings was like watching the cameras that were outside the O.J Simpson trial. I dont understand this at all. Having a view outside the buildings let us see the actual happenings and the attacks that were actually taking place. Having watched the attacks from inside the buildings may have given us a different view of the attacks (more from victims point of view), but I dont think that if we had seen it from this point of view it would have made anyone more of an expert on the attacks. This would have just let us see the more human aspect of the attacks. Maybe someone can help me to understand what she was getting at?

Great. So now I'm back. At the risk of no-one seeing this because I've been away for so long. Good news is I've added the RSS feed to em_dash to my blog, so I'll be reminded to read your entries more often.

To greenb: you're a skeptic. That's good. When you learn, you really learn. I'm also a skeptic. Always question the truth. That's the only way you'll get to the bottom of anything.

Turning on and off your ideological glasses is a practice that's most rewarding. It's easier than we think. Read up on Louis Althusser and John Fiske. (Even if you've already read Marx.)

Brevity is a wonderful thing. If only more academics appreciated it more. Ulmer's book is so "convoluted" because he understands his audience. We've grown far in the tradition of logic. There's no easy way to "break the envelope." Teaching someone how to "let go" of their ideological views even for a split second takes some coaxing. Think of the amount of time it takes for us to build our identities.

We are learning how to think differently. Indeed, we are on the brink of change similar to what was experienced between orality and literacy.

Bottom line: in order to embrace change, we must expect anything because as far as the future goes, nothing is for certain.

Describing the condition of modern life, the following words come to mind:
hurried, stressful, violent, expensive, unstable, turbulent

-Industrialized countries have advanced in medicine and medical technologies, but the modern health care system in the U.S. is a “bureaucratic nightmare”. Much still needs to be done to get modern health care to impoverished countries.

-Human and civil rights have made great advances in the last 100 years, but discrimination against women, blacks, Hispanics, and gays and lesbians, just to name a few, is still widespread, and legislation is needed to protect and enhance the civil rights of minority groups.

-Terrorism is a real threat to this country. Complacency may be what we should be worried about.

Mrs. Harris joined our class for a day, and got a little lesson on Gregory Ulmer, and in return, we received some lessons from her. She defined beliefs (a mental acceptance of an idea) and values (social standards held by an individual or group), and stated that our value structure is established by the age of five. At what point did I change my value system? This was a question I wrote in my notes, and I am not sure I know the answer.
I understand the difference between fact and opinion, but inference hasn’t always been so clear. To infer, or make an inference is to state an opinion based on fact. An opinion is a belief on what seems to be true in someone’s mind.
Other words related to this topic are:

view – an opinion affected by one’s personal manner of looking at things.
conviction – a strong belief about whose truth one has no doubts.
sentiment – an opinion that is the result of deliberation but is colored with emotion.
persuasion – a strong belief that is unshakable because one wishes to believe in its truth.
(Source: Good old Webster’s Dictionary)
Thank you again, Mrs. Harris, for your contribution to our class.

Mrs. Harris visited our class today to lecture on distinguishing between fact, opinion, and inference. She began her lecture by distinguishing the difference between a belief and a value. Up until today, I related the two terms to be quite similar, however, I was wrong. Values can refer to family, education, and success. In contrast, some beliefs are based on knowledge. Today, I learned that inference is an opinion based on a fact. Mrs. Harris did a great job in using examples of each that are revelant to the class. For instance, when she used politics and the upcoming election, it was easy to relate to.

My testimonial was constructed by the contribution of watching the movie "Cinderella" as a child. The method that I used while constructing my paper was based on the characteristics of Cinderella, such as: caring, trustworthy, strong-willed, and independent. On the basis of these aspects, I can reflect on this movie and realize how much of an impact this movie had on me while watching it as a child. This movie just proves that a person can be torn to pieces, abused, and humiliated, and yet still be strong. Unfortunately, children's movies have become so violent and contain content and humor that is only appropriate for adults. It's a shame that children don't have many positive role-models, or heroes, to look up to today.

I learned a lot in the discussion today. i learned inference is an opinion based on a fact. Values are established and beliefs are what we know or believe in. Values are something we learn before the age of five and are hard to change after that. Facts are proven and a veriferable unit of information.

Testimonial
My all- time favorite movie from my childhood is Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice’s setting is in New England around the 1970’s. The beginning of the movie tells that they are going to die and Beetlejuice can be heard laughing. The attitudes are very negative when it comes to believing in ghosts or live after death. Beetlejuice’s character is suppose to scare people but it does not work.
Barbara and her husband live in this nice beautiful New England house. The couple goes into town to buy some things for the house at the hardware store. They were on their way back home when they swerved to miss a dog that was on the bridge. However, they went over to far and drove off a bridge into the water and died. Their ghosts appear at the house that they use to live in. Beetlejuice is already dead but he goes through a local newspaper and decides to prey on the dead couple.
A couple becomes interested in the house so, they brought the house. The new couple has a daughter named Lydia. They walked through the house looking and checking out every little thing. Lydia videotaped everything that she could possibility tape but the attic. Lydia’s mother decides that she wants to redecorate the house by painting the rooms. This upsets Barbara so, they do things to try and scare the family away. However, this did not work and the house got remodeled which included getting rid of Barbara things.
Barbara and her husband find an advertisement in the attic for a bio-exorcist named Beetlejuice. However, it did not tell any information on how to contact him but lists his name three times. Lydia was outside taking pictures when she noticed Barbara and her husband looking out the attic window. Jane, who was friend’s with the Barbara gives Lydia a skeleton key which is suppose to open any door in the house. The television in the attic turns on where Barbara and her husband are as Lydia is trying to unlock the door. The television commercial
was for Beetlejuice says that he could get rid of unwanted people that are living in someone else’s house by saying Beetlejuice three times. Barbara finds a book about decreased people so, she reads the book.
Lydia tries to get into the attic and as she tries Barbara and her husband draw a door like the book says. Lydia finally gets into the attic and discovers a model of the town. Barbara and her husband went through the door they drew which leads them to a waiting area full of dead people. Barbara case worker told them that they had to get the people out of the house themselves not to use Beetlejuice. Barbara and her husband try to scare Lydia’s family away but it did not work. Lydia meets Barbara and her husband so they talk about everything. Barbara decides that they should call Beetlejuice to help them. After they awoke Beetlejuice, they decide that they do not want to work with him but they did not say his name three times to get rid of him.
Barbara decides the night that Lydia’s family is having people over that it would be a good night to try and scare them. However, it did not work like they wanted it to. Lydia tells the house guests that the house is haunted with ghosts. The house guests did not believe that the house is haunted so they all leave. This makes Lydia’s mother mad so, she demands that Lydia take her
                                                                                                                              Norman 3
up there to speak with the ghosts. Barbara and her husband jump out the window as they are walking into the attic. Beetlejuice laughs at Barbara and her husband because they could not scare anyone.
Beetlejuice appears as Lydia and her family is leaving the attic. Everyone starts running as Beetlejuice starts chasing and trying to scare them. Barbara tries to come up with another way to scare the family off. Beetlejuice begins talking to Lydia about the stuff that is going on. Beetlejuice tries to marry Lydia but Barbara stops the wedding by saying Beetlejuice three times. However, Beetlejuice turned Barbara and her husband into older people and made their teeth fall out before they got to stop the wedding.
Lydia leaves Barbara a note saying that she wanted to die and how she was going to kill herself. She was going to do this because she was not being able to pass her classes. Barbara and her husband tell Lydia that they will help her pass her classes. Lydia studies with them up until the day of the test. She comes home and tells them that she got an A on her math test. Lydia got a C her on science project because she would not cut open a frog.

The condition of modern life we inherit would involve dependency on oil. Over the past century, we have become a nation that is depending upon overseas corporation’s involvement distributing oil. OPEC is the leader in oil production. This has recently led to major problems in the United States and the world. The price of oil has jumped even higher in recent years due to the war in Iraq. It would seem the oil industry created a monopoly; they rule the world due to our dependency.
If we are to give the next generation a chance at independence, we need to start now. The world needs to begin researching better alternatives to oil. If we continue on this path, the next generation will inherit an even bigger problem; disaster will strike leaving the economy crippled.

The message I find in Alice in Wonderland is the world is a different place outside your family setting. Even though you may feel lost and alone you will always find your way back. I believe this movie gives us a way to escape into fantasy inside a strange and exciting world in which we can find characters from our own life. The movie shows us how to overcome adversity through continued perseverance. We learn that things are not always, what they seem and through a song called “unbirthday,” we learn to celebrate everyday life.

Methods for writing a testimonial
1. Pick one book or movie to recall with certainty.
2. Brainstorm and write the specifics down that you already now.
3. Collect and organize thoughts.
A. Establish your own beliefs about the subject.
B. Assume characters are doing what they believe to be right.
C. Try to recall events that lead to characters beliefs.
4. Try to find a relationship with the character.
5. Review the movie or text and determine how accurate your memory is.
6.Write chronologically as the events take place.

Condition of Modern Life
Technology is a condition of life inherited from previous generations. Cell phones and computers are prime examples. Cell phones have changed the new way of communications. You can talk to anyone anywhere with a push of a button. Nevertheless, when it does not work we feel lost and unable to decide what to do. This is different from the landlines that we used in previous years.
The self-scan registers at the local grocery stores, we have become such a rushed culture we do not even have time to let someone ekes check us out. The dong it our self is great however, one never thinks about these machines taking the jobs of local workers. I am sure that the companies that have them love to think of the wages that they do not have to pay. So while the convince of technology is great, often we come to relay on it all to often and lose site of the jobs that are lost because of it.

For my testimonial, I reflected upon my experiences and adventures as a Ninja Turtle lover when I was five years old.

The techniques I used was to flashback on why I acted the way I did. I created a scene to show what happened and followed up with reasoning for how the Ninja Turtles affected my family.

What was the solution to my adventures with the Ninja Turtles? A direct response was caused due to my actions that I had taken by loving the cartoon I watched. I interpreted the solution that I thought happened by a cause and effect scenario.

I used the ideas of how the movie was constructed or would be viewed to write my paper. I tried to tell how my character would do things in the world if he was alive. I tried to view the attitudes of all the characters and the setting.

There I sat, with 45 of my peers. Many of them my age(19), some of them older and a few younger men. Almost all of us had an extremely long day, bouncing from one airport to the next, from flight to flight. We had finally reached our destination, only to be packed in a bus and sent on one last 3 hour ride. As I looked around I saw many eager faces, including the one that stared back at me from the window. Sometimes I still wonder if that eagerness we held was a tool or flaw. We had all almost certainly saw the same ads:" See the world, Be all you can be..." and so on. While we coasted down the same Texas roadway that thousands had before us, I thought about everything. Life, from before and from this point on. Family, where they were at that moment and what they were doing. Then all at once, I heard a battle cry of sorts. It was the group of six guys behind me that had been loud and obnoxious the whole ride so far. They yelled something about pride in the Air Force. I could have cared less what it was they screamed, although i was semi-pissed off that they had snapped me out of my last daydream before being held prisoner for six weeks. We were on our way to Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio, for basic training. My eyes started to drift back out my window, and I slipped back into my thoughts. Then we passed an exit ramp. I looked at the little city that the exit led to,eerily similar to good ol' Parkersburg, and was swept up in a flood of thoughts and emotions. Was I doing the right thing? Do I know what the right thing for myself is yet? Is it just too damn late now? I felt like I was standing in the middle of the busiest highway as all these thoughts just flew passed me. none of them could be stopped or flagged down. It was too late, we were minutes away from Lackland and all I could do was wonder what was next and try to prepare for this unknown.....

Memory Glimpse
A scene that came to mind right off thebat was my first day of headstart. It was something that I will never forget. Nancy, my mother told me that I was going to headstart so she could go to her GED class. The day that she told me about rolled around, She walked me into headstart to drop me off. Once inside I began to beg her not to leave there. I told her that I did not want to go. She told me that I had to stay and left me standing there crying. When the day was over, I did not want to leave.

Micro Scene 1
May 27, 2007, was a day to remember because I graduated from Ritchie County High School. I remember seeing a lot of people enter the gymnasium. I could hear voices and people talking outside of the auditorium. I walked out of the auditorium with my best friend, Meranda to see if our families were there yet. We talked with our fellow classmates and friends before we graduated. We all gathered back into the auditorium around 1:50 p.m. during this time one of our fellow classmates talked to us. His grandmother had passed away two weeks before graduation and we all sent flowers to her funeral. He had us all in tears before we even walked into our graduation. I walked in the gymnasium to see it completely full. I could my family scream and holler as they announced my name. I sat two rows back from the front of the gym floor and could see everyone in the bleachers. I sat there listening to the principal and our fellow classmates give their speeches. Our class just sat there just waiting for all of it to be over because it meant we were no longer high school students. We all cried as our slide show of everyone’s baby, senior, and friends pictures were displayed for our families. It now came the time to walk across the stage, a moment everyone had waited so long for. I cried as my name was being called but my family was cheering me on at the same time. After graduation was over, everyone went outside to get their last pictures of the whole class together and of their friends. Several people had parties to celebrate their graduation. We went to a couple of those parties where people were getting drunk and passing out. This was a great day!

Micro Scene 2
On January 22, 2008, I was driving to college on Route 47. It was snowing but it was a really fine snow so I did not think anything of it. I left where my mother and grandmother was around 8:30 a.m.. I was going between 25 to 35 miles per hour when I had hit a slick spot of snow or ice but I am not sure of which one it was. This all happened at 8:45 a.m. and I was only five minutes away from where my mother was. The ice or snow threw my car towards the embankment of rocks. It made my car turn back towards the other embankment which was a hillside of trees with the Hughes River right beside of it. The speed and snow made my car go airborne before I could even react. I hit the first tree going about 25 mp.h.. This tree made my engine and everything quit running. My car began to roll, it rolled three times during this process I hit a second tree. I closed my eyes during all of the rolling but I could feel it happening. I opened my eyes as I was hitting a third tree before the car came to stop. I had two inches to crawl out of my driver side door which was up against the third tree. I crawled up the embankment on my hands and knees because I could hardly breathe. I made it up the embankment and started walking towards the store just up the road from where I wrecked. I flagged a woman down that had just left where my mother was at. I explained to her what had happened and asked if she could take me back to where my mother was. My mother had already left but we passed her. We got her to stop and I told her what happened.

*names have been changed
During my winter break from college, I was driving back home from taking my little brother, Jared*, to school. It was horribly foggy that morning, and I couldn't even seen ten feet in front of me. The speed limit was 55 mph, but I was only going between 35 and 45 mph. I came around a sharp bend in the road, and , all of the sudden, I saw flashing yellow bus lights. It was far too close for me to stop before i got to the bus so I slammed on my brakes. Then I saw two little boys... no older than ten... standing in the middle of the road. All I could do was scream... and pray. When my car finally came to a stop, I jumped out and all I thought was "Holy shit I've jsut hit a kid." Then I saw them standing off to the side of the road. It was like someone had poured a ten gallon bucket of cold relief over my head. This is one of the scariest time in my life.

Obtuse Meaning
My defintion of busaculture is a business that incorprates culture with their decisions or everyday activities dealing with the business.

Haiku
I will do this when I have a better undestanding of what Ulmer is asking for.

Illumination
My illumination is the photograph of my brother and I standing at the court house the day we got adopted. I felt excited, overwhelmed, but mainly reliefed that it was finally over.

Decision Scene
My friend and I have experienced homesickness. We were in Pittsburgh and our car broke down. However, we did not no anyone there to get help to get it running again. We were both homesick and that was the first time when had been away from home by ourselves. We were homesick because we feel safe at home. Boredom comes to me when my car is not running and I can not do anything or go anywhere.

Frederick Douglass
Yes, but i do not quite understand what he means.

Not just for ladies. Log on to Suze's official web site (www.suzeorman.com) and read about her life. A little girl with a speech impediment, low SAT scores and a language credit shy of a degree, is now a nationally recognized and repected authority on financial management. She admits she still has trouble pronouncing some words, yet she has her own television show and is featured as a guest on many other shows. What an inspiration to anyone!

Let me think this through. This ad appeared in Amsterdam from a company that is Japanese. So, the Americans view this, and with a raised eyebrow, comment that the ad could be viewed as racist. The Europeans claim all they see are two women trying to dominate the other and wonder why Americans always want to play the race card. Is racism only alive and well in the USA? Why are Europeans so quick to criticize the Americans that may be uncomfortable seeing this ad? What kind of statement would the ad have made if the white woman was wearing black clothing and the black woman wearing white? The intent of the Japanese, to me , is clearly to cause controversy. They played it safe by displaying the ad in Amsterdam. Can you imagine the uproar if the ad appeared in Times Square? I would like to know what a black European woman thinks of the ad.

Culture is what keeps our society together and intact. If we didn't have culture the world would be thrown into choas. It keeps us from going crazy. We have responiblities and rules in our culture that shows and tells us how to live, act, and respond to things in our environment. My term extension word is "nursaculture", a word used to tell of the nursing career.

Term Extensions:
Culture refers to a system of beliefs, values, and customs to an individual or a society as a whole. Culture has everything to do with life or any type of profession someone chooses. Culture to me is a way to cope my surroundings and the people who I associate with on a day to day basis. Personally, I do not feel the world would be the same if we did not have culture to make us unique. Business Adminstration and Management is the process that helps accomplish the goals of an organization. It also includes Planing process, marketing, sales etc. My major course of study is Business Administration and Management. My term extension word is "buzaculture," a word used to reference a specific occupation or pursuit and values or beliefs.

Sometimes I feel like and associate with the "Monk" characterization--a recent episode (can't recall the subtitle) referred to him as a "technological dinosaur." When I heard the reference, I thought "Yeah..., that's me; I'm a technological dinosaur." Why so? Hmmm..., I remember the development of the calculator, the Scientific Calculator in particular; the "old" copier that used purple toner and the sound of it when used: 't-h-u-m-p, d-a-t-h-u-m-p'; --how would we spell the sound? And cut-n-paste method of creating hard-copy for publication--using wooden rulers to measure margin widths and lengths. I remember, then, the technological advancements and the socio-cultural changes that resulted. Thus, I suppose the idea of interpreting racial contexts from product packaging seems--well, "un-real." While the PSP ad, then, focuses upon the packaging of a particular product, given the "bigger" picture, the larger context of consumer experience, I wonder about the validity of such conclusions. Don't misunderstand: I do think that product advertisements, that marketing groups, survey pools, etc., shape product imaging, design, packaging, and marketing. So..., the "dinosaur" experienced, today, the PSP--very "cool," but not "kewl." I like the European argument reflected in the Sony PSP Forum that, perhaps, racial context should not be read into the ad.

I see the PSP as just being a game that I play. The first one I ever played on was my sisters and it was black. I never saw it as being racist in any way. It was just a color. My sister for Christmas bought me a silver slim addition and yet again I never thought much about the color. I looked it up on the web and it says that Sony has eight colors for the PSP: piano black, ceramic white, pink, metallic blue, silver, champagne gold, “The Simpsons” yellow, and deep red. I have only seen piano black, ceramic white, and silver. The white one I saw had Darth Vader on the back panel. As I have stated before I just see the Ad as being a color and nothing more to it.

After reading some about Mr. Joseph Campbell, I had to find out more. I find this man extremely interesting. Im still lokking up info. on him and some of his books. Thanks for the introduction professor. Got any more material to check out about him?

BILL MOYERS: Do you ever have the sense of... being helped by hidden hands?

JOSEPH CAMPBELL: All the time. It is miraculous. I even have a superstition that has grown on me as a result of invisible hands coming all the time - namely, that if you do follow your bliss you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. When you can see that, you begin to meet people who are in your field of bliss, and they open doors to you. I say, follow your bliss and don't be afraid, and doors will open where you didn't know they were going to be.

* * *

"My general formula for my students is "Follow your bliss." Find where it is, and don't be afraid to follow it." ~From the Joseph Campbell Foundation homepage.

I understand why the altterrain is such a great idea, and why you have brought this to our attention. There is advertising absolutely everywhere. This makes me think of a clip from an animated show called Futurama. A character named "Fry" realizes he has commercials in his dreams. He tells the rest of the crew and they agree that they have commercials in their dreams. "Fry" gets disgusted and explains that in his time they had ads on TV, in movies, in magazines and newspapers, on food products, at ballparks, on buildings and buses, but definitily never in dreams!

Culture is the system of shared beliefs, values, customs, behaviours, and artifacts that the members of society use to cope with their world and with one another. My major is Nursing and, to me, it plays a big role in everyone's culture. It is the patient's beliefs and customs that mostly influence their decisions. Whether it be a procedure they need or just what they want done if they took a turn for the worst. For instance, if a patient was to decide if they want CPR or the ventilator if something was to go wrong, that decision would be based mostly upon their religon and beliefs. I believe that most of the people living in this country make their daily decisions based upon their culture. Without culture influencing everyone's lives, the world would not be the same.

Accounting is the systematic recording, reporting, and analysis of financial transactions of a business.

Mathematics (colloquially, maths, or math), is the body of knowledge centered on concepts such as quantity, structure, space, and change, and also the academic discipline that studies them. Benjamin Peirce called it "the science that draws necessary conclusions".

I chose the word accumath for my term extension. My career major is accounting, which as we all know conists of alot of math, figuring, and numbers. Accounting is Math!!!! Not only do you have to have good math skills, but you must have knowldge, power, and the know-how to be an excellent accountant, also.

Culture takes the tastes in art and manners that are favored by a social group; therefore, numbers and knowledge must be the art of accounting.

Obtuse View

I am not going to say much about this concept mainly because I do not understand what is going on here. I understand the idea that certain images can bring up ideas specifically related to one’s experience. I do not, however, understand how forcing yourself to look at a picture and then explaining how the picture makes you feel will help you understand yourself. To me, this feels forced and not very organic.

This is all that I will say about the topic for now until I understand it better.

Haiku

The idea of Haiku, as Ulmer states, is not for the use of poetry but brevity, especially in reference to cyberspace. The point is that in order to be heard in settings with so many voices all scrambled together fighting for a chance to be heard, the most condensed and concise voice will win.

The Gettysburg Address Example

Who was the guy who spoke before President Lincoln? He was the guy who spoke for two hours, and he was also the guy no one remembers. Lincoln’s speech, however, was incredibly brief, lasting only two minutes. It was also incredibly effective, and is still cited as an example for speaking in almost every high school speech class to this day. As I write this, I sit looking at a copy of the Bible on my bookshelf. Two rows down there is a copy of the Dao Te Ching; in fact I believe that the particular copy I am looking at has both the English translation and Chinese text in it as well as a few pictures thrown in for good measure. It is still only one-eighth the size of the Bible and I guarantee that it is written in larger font. Both books contain more or less the same basic ideas. Perhaps there is something to be said for brevity.

Haiku and the Human Experience

The idea of Haiku is that you take away everything that is not essential to conveying your idea or experience. Using Haiku as a way to gain insight of human development is quite helpful, but should the human experience be reduced to a single paragraph, sentence, or word?

The idea of the Haiku reminds me of a physicist I once saw interviewed on Tech TV. He was talking about the “multiverse” theory and as he spoke, they showed pictures of several dry erase boards that were full of formulas and calculations. During the interview, he explained that once the formulas were figured out and the “multiverse” understood, he believed that it would be a formula so small it would fit across the front of a t-shirt.

One Final Thought

If brevity is so essential to being heard, that is, if Einstein’s entire life’s worth of work can be summed up as E=mc^2, and the “multiverse” explained in a single line, then why is this book so convoluted? It seems that the intellectual should be able to do more with less instead of less with more.

If the issue is important, then state the issue and be less concerned with words for the sake of words. The intellectual should understand the economics of what he says and realize that value decreases as supply increases.

The career field i have narrowed down to but not completely adopted is journalism. This is my chosen because I feel that we stay informed as a people through these messengers we call journalists. Without being and constantly striving to stay informed. We as a people might not be doomed, but would be very ignorant. Journalinfoism: Journalism-the collection and editing of news for presentation through the media. Information refers, then, to a collection of facts or data; the act of informing [an audience] or the condition of being informed.

Culture refers to every "thing" within a civilization (e.g., beliefs, values, and knowledge). It can pertain to anything, from the behavior of people when they enter their homes, to the people whose aspiration, innovation, and creativity shape its practice. My major is journalism and, for me, is completely drenched in culture. What is made available to a people by the media is an effect of what the culture is. How censored or uncensored and free the media situation in a country, is directly connected to culture. In our country, I cannot watch the news, unless it's sports, without feeling completely depressed afterward. All I get informed about is what violent act happened where, and what celebrity is pregnant. I have to be honest and say that I wouldnt want to be anywhere else, or some where I don't have a clue that there is anything violent happening at all. As a journalist, I would give a very interesting point of view within a culture, not only for reading purposes, for its textual value as a reflection of memory, of testimony, but to share memory with others, too.

I think we are all consumers of media, with or without accepting and/or embracing this fact. Many people are constant consumers. I don't know if I exactly understand the question posed. If I do, there are more and more opportunities in an emerging career field. I read blogs constantly by people who are paid for there good old fashioned opinions. Just taking a brief look at someones myspace or facebook page, gives you an almost instant glimpse to what kind of person they are. There is always that small section somewhere on a page with an occupation heading. What you choose to put on there is completely up to you. Lie and say you work for the government and make $250,000. The videos one decides to embed on their page can say much about a person. They may have something humorous, a music video of a favorite song. I have read of bands being discovered from their post on youtube. They wanted to share something they were passionate about, and it completely paid off.

I am entering the field of Nursing; it is a big part of the business world. However, while readers conduct business in every career out there--from a small grocery store to a multi-millionaire dollar corpoation, the field of nursing may not pay the most money in the business world, but they're out there. Even though they don't sell goods, they are there for a reason. For example, they are there to work with the doctors to help care for a person when they are suffering from illness or disease, or to keep someone alive if they are dying.

I am one of the many pursuing a career in the medical field. It seems oversaturated on the educational front, but that is probably because there is a national shortage of nurses (for example) and the educational system is trying to generate enthusiasm for the field. After all, the medical field is a business. I cannot think of a career field that is not a business on some level. I'm not sure the "most money" is made in the medical field. We all are aware that entertainment is BIG business and so is professional sports - but I'll save that for the discourse on entertainment. Real estate, (though cyclical, and not necessarily true in the present economy) has made many people weathier than many in the medical profession. Banking, stocks and bonds - all "businesses" where mucho bucks can be made. In general terms, "business" is a lucrative field. If one can narrow the business field to a specialty or expertise, one could find themselves on easy street.

Of course, the local area depends upon medicine and business to provide for this service-based economy. Your observations are, I think, "right-on," but the question is: What other fields or jobs are available beyond medicine and business? While these fields sustain the local economy, or the state economy, USA Today, for example, ranked West Virginia in the low -40's nationally; other reports indicated the same for the practice of medicine and law, etc; it does not sustain the culture. Culturally, WV leads the nation in obesity, domestic violence (Task Force, Gov. Underwood), alcoholism, prescription drug abuse, etc): Why?

What does everybody think of when they hear the word "wealth"? So, we're a little bit older now, and we can argue what wealth is and how the people who are wealthy act to people who aren't as "wealthy".

Sure, "wealth" can bring happiness, and a person can essentially buy what they want or vacation whenever. What about the wealth of former NFL player Sean Taylor who was targeted because of his wealth. Is that still happiness? Is that what a person gets for being "wealthy"? Working hard your whole life to become "wealthy" is supposed to be a reward for hard work and staying dedicated to what you pursued, but being targeted for pursuing success in life...is that worth being "wealthy"?

I'm doing the whole Business thing with Accounting and pursuing my CPA plus Law Degree. I'm going to admit that I'm failing to produce my own created word for my degree, but I've noticed some things about the Business world from personal experience already. Being a freshman in college, it seems that a lot of people in high school always have his/her mind set on going into the medical field. Because when you are pre-18 years old, I think a majority of teenagers hear how great the medical field is, and that's where a person earns the most money. Junior high schools and High schools do not do a good job of promoting a Business type degree whenever great opportunities are in Business.

Obviously I am rambling, but does anybody think a word can be invented for the over-marketing of Medical degrees in high school in contrast with great opportunities available in the Business world?

Culture refers to a way of life. Such as religion, customs, language, etc. Agriculture can bring a new meaning, caused by the extension of the word "culture". Agriculture refers to farming and so on. I am majoring in Elementary Education so the term culture can be significant in my field of study. My specialization in this field is Speical Education, so if I were to place this term in front of the world culture, it would change the meaning of both words by combining them. Special Education-culture would bring on the meaning of the way of life of special education students who have learning disabilities or are gifted.

"cmh" combines "business" and "marketing" to produce a kind of neologism--"busilife." Perhaps de la Torre can assist here, but I was thinking that "busi+n+ting" might work: "businetting," or other approximation. I like the connotation, too: the shortened form of "Internet" + the participial form. Keep up the good work! Interesting!.

Culture is a wide category. Human development of learning can be like and kind of culture. Culture refers to everything, whether that it being dress, manners, language, rituals, etc. My specialized area of work can be defined as a subject of study, a discipline or profession is an area of specialized work. First, my work deals with agricultural work. We are a property research company which deals with the fields, and leasing property. Second, my major in college can deal with culture. My major is business and marketing which deals with society, language, and civilization. Generally, most people think of culture as just crop and herd, its more than that. Culture is a wide variety of things, including business, churches, the way we do things different from others. There are many different kinds of cultures, and some that haven't been introduced to me yet. New cultures can open up everyday.
